Most people know that silk garments (under- and outerwear) require extra special care so that the fabric isn’t damaged and the dye doesn’t bleed. But contrary to what a lot of folks believe, this doesn’t mean that you absolutely must take your prized silk panties, chemises, camisoles, robes, babydoll nighties, or other lingerie to an expensive dry cleaner to ensure they aren’t mangled or mottled. For much less money (and time) than that, you can successfully and thoroughly clean your cherished silk clothing at home, and the results will be just as good.
When cleaning silk panties or other lingerie or clothing, the most important thing is to avoid using harsh detergents; stick with mild soaps such as Dr. Bronner’s (very diluted) or other gentle varieties sold at supermarkets and health food stores everywhere. Another tip is to use only lukewarm water – not too hot or cold. And another pointer is to rub the fabric very gently when removing a stain (for example).
The whole process should start with checking the fabric to see if it’s color-fast, by treating a tiny section on the inside of the clothing; if the dye runs, then yes you’ll have to go the dry cleaner route. If not, proceed as follows: briefly soak the garment in soapy water, and gently rub out any stains you see; rinse off with some water mixed with about a quarter cup of white vinegar (which helps remove the soap), then rinse again with cold water; place the garment on a towel and roll it up to wring out some of the water; leave it on the towel (or a thoroughly dry one) for awhile. Then place the clothing in a plastic bag and put that in the refrigerator for about half an hour (not everyone does this, but it’s recommended to preserve the fabric’s luster); finally, gently press the *inside* of the garment with a *very lightly heated* iron. Place on a hanger and let it dry thoroughly.
